IPhone as the Backup Band

When I built the Chakakhantroller, I was attempting to control audio and video simultaneously for live performance. Nastasha from Nastasha and the Reject has done just that using solely the iPhone. Ironically after going through the process of designing a “one man band” controller, I decided I actually preferred a group ensemble for performance..  “solo” controllers I think are useful for adding specific nuance and effect for the individual artist in a band situation, but in a solo situation I’ve found it to be distracting from the music, which for me misses the whole point – controllers should be supporting the story of the musician rather than be the story on its own.  And the smaller the controller, the harder to translate the action to an audience. Still it’s pretty cool to control your set with an iPhone.

TouchOSC was used as wireless OSC to MIDI controller in conjunction with Ableton Live and Resolume VJ Software. Natasha altered and mixed the visuals and sound live using the TouchOSC application on the iPhone.

All aspects of the performance demonstration, including effected sound and video processing, were done live. The top right hand shot clarifies Natasha’s actions on the iPhone to control the performance.
