Luma Nocturna
A clip from the chilling and eerie “Luma Nocturna” (1974), an early Sky-David (the artist formerly known as Dennis Pies) masterpiece of abstract animation that turns vaguely familiar shapes into an uneasy realm of shifting biological forms complete with expanding, contracting, spiraling blues, blacks, and whites.
“This was my first exploration in luminance animation. Nacreous pigments on the polished deep black surface of the scratch board allow vibrant white lines and airbrushed life forms to dance until the city and the airport landing at night finish the piece. This is the first film that I made with a luminous tunnel and got the work doing the tunnels for the feature DREAMSCAPE. This was by far my most popular animated film and is still screened today.” – Sky-David

Ear to the Ground Audio Slideshow
Seed Magazine has an audio slideshow with soundscapes of the quietest places in the United States.
Ear to the Ground
Natural quiet is a rapidly disappearing resource. According to acoustic ecologist Gordon Hempton, there are only seven or eight naturally quiet places – defined as where the sounds of nature are unbroken for intervals of at least 15 minutes during daylight hours – left in the United States. None exist in Europe anymore. But if you travel far enough to remote corners of the Earth, and listen carefully enough, you can still find them.
Acoustic ecology studies were established in the 1960s by naturalist R. Murray Schafer and his colleagues at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia as an attempt to define the relationship between humans and their environment, as mediated through sound. With a focus that spans both science and art, the continuum of acoustic ecology often attracts individuals who are part researcher, part composer, and part adventurer.

The Only Christmas Album You’ll Ever Need on Saturn
Straight from King’s vaults: Rotary Connection – Peace (1968)
Peace (Side 1)
Peace (Side 2)
Rotary Connection’s psychedelic chamber soul continues to sound ambitious and progressive decades after the group’s departure. Instantly recognizable from the dramatic string arrangements of Charles Stepney and the five-octave voice of Minnie Riperton, the group released six albums between 1967 and 1971 that combined rock, soul, and psychedelia to theatrical and occasionally transcendental heights. May you have a peaceful holiday and an incredible 2010.

Ursula Dudziak
Chorale for One / Urszula Dudiak / Future Talk / Inner City Records 1979:
Urszula Dudziak was born October 22, 1943 in the Straconka neighborhood of Bielsko-Biala Poland. Voted “jazz singer of the year” by the Los Angeles Times in 1979, Dudziak is known for her five octave range, revolutionary use of electronic devices to process her vocals, and for using sounds, tones and scatting rather than words.
She frequently worked with leading contemporary musicians, including Archie Shepp and Lester Bowie, Bobby McFerrin, Norma Winstone, Sting, Michelle Hendricks, and Lauren Newton. She often worked with Gil Evans in the 80s, recording on five Gil Evans releases.
Dudziak studied piano and began to sing after hearing Ella Fitzgerald, taking two years of vocal lessons. She quickly became the leading jazz vocalist in Poland. She met and later married Michal Urbaniak, and recorded several releases with him. In the late 60s they began to tour overseas and in the 70s settled in New York.
Check out her gear in this late 80s clip:
And an example of her extraordinary vocal percussionism:
