John Cage Meets Sun Ra

John Cage and Sun Ra, 1986, Coney Island, New York

John Cage and Sun Ra performed together in 1986 at Coney Island in New York. Sun Ra begins with improvisations on the Yamaha DX7 synthesizer. John Cage performs his vocal work, Empty Words (Part IV), then each alternates performances. An interesting discourse on the performance at sputnikmusic.

Eliane Radigue – Buddhism and an Arp 2500 Synthesizer

“working with eliane is learning to hear as she hears. the discipline which she brings to her involvement with sound is legendary. she is persistent, critical, alert, and full of self doubt. to interpret her work is to take on these attributes. in her apartment she is in a world of her own, surrounded by curiosities, habits, memories, plants, audio equipment, art objects. she passes in and out of the kitchen through a curtain of hanging philodendron; her sphinx-like cat observes silently. in her world, sound is never altogether the same and never altogether different, as she says, paraphrasing verlaine. to interpret her music is to enter a world not quite like any other, yet still our own, lived world; and to act in it, consciously and responsibly.”

- Charles Curtis

Ways to Love Haiti: Toto Bissainthe

Toto Bissainthe was one of the most prolific singers to come from the Caribbean. Haiti’s turbulent history and incredible culture are seemingly contained in any of Bissainthe’s overwhelmingly moving folk songs.  Raw emotion and true to form vodun traditional melodies. She is the truth, and a testament to the purpose of music in its purest form: to express, heal, remember, and celebrate. Her full catalog is for sale on her official website.

John Francis The Planetwalker

john_francis

via wikipedia >>
John Francis (born 1946) is an American environmentalist nicknamed the planetwalker. Born in Philadelphia, the son of a West Indian immigrant, he moved to Marin County, California as a young man. After witnessing the devastation caused by a 1971 oil spill in San Francisco Bay, he stopped riding in motorized vehicles, a vow which lasted 22 years from 1972 until 1994. From 1973 until 1990, he also spent 17 years voluntarily silent. During this time he earned a Ph.D. in land management and traveled extensively, walking across the entire width of the lower 48 states of the USA as well as walking to South America.

As Francis traveled about on foot, people would sometimes stop to talk about what he was doing, and he often found himself arguing with them, as well as with friends and acquaintances, about his decision to go on foot. On his birthday in 1973, Francis decided to stop speaking as a gift to his community, to not argue for one day and instead listen to what others had to say. He found this so valuable that he continued to be silent the next day. This continued and he ended up not speaking for 17 years, with the exception of a phone call to his mother after 10 years of silence. During this time, he communicated by writing and gestures, and also expressed himself by playing the banjo. He ended his vow of silence on Earth Day in 1990.

Buffy Sainte-Marie

Buffy Sainte-Marie is a pioneer in digital arts and a revolutionary musician.

via heyokamagazine >>
Buffy Sainte-Marie was Born at Piapot (Cree) Indian Reserve in the Qu’Appelle Valley of Saskatchewan. She was raised in Maine and Massachusetts and received a Ph.D. in Fine Art from the University of Massachusetts. She also holds degrees in both Oriental Philosophy and teaching. As a college student in the early 1960s and 70s, Buffy Sainte-Marie became known as a writer of bone penetrating protest songs and soul piercing love songs (times of civil disobedience, psychedelic Flower Power, nuclear proliferation and the Vietnam war).

She describes her electronic paintings as “Painting with Light” . Beginning in her “wet” studio with regular brushes and paper/canvas, she imports images into her Macintosh at home in Hawaii, and the works become digital … once she’s turned the images into photographs, she paints them with discreet applications of metallic dyes. They begin and end in the “real studio”, but the middle is a combination of photography and digital pixel painting.

Still Bill

bill-withers

watch the trailer at stillbillthemovie.com

“Eight years ago, filmmakers Damani Baker and Alex Vlack had what seemed like a simple idea: make a film about Bill Withers. Little was known about Withers since he’d left the business of music behind, and his music, which includes the classics “Ain’t No Sunhine”, “Lean On Me”, and “Just the Two of Us”, had left its mark on the world in general and these two filmmakers in particular. But they soon found that access to Withers was not freely granted, and that many doors would open, only to slam back shut. With such limited access, their attentions shifted to trying to produce a concert of his music, which would provide a narrative thread for a discussion of his influence. For while his songs are part of the American fabric, his name is not well known. (more…)
