Saturn Never Sleeps is the fruitful collaboration between legendary producer King Britt and singer/artist Rucyl. For the past two years or so they have been holed up, perfecting their craft and dedicating themselves to continuing a mutant, forward thinking version of fellow Philadelphian Sun-Ra. With their debut album, Yesterday’s Machine, they have launched themselves into the spotlight, with a wide ranging tour and technologically informed sound. This mix sees the duo splitting selection duties into two engrossing parts, mixing new contemporaries such as Africa Hitech with classic BOC and Aphex tunes as well as their own Saturn Never Sleeps material. Check the album, out August 2nd on the prolific Alpha Pup Records.

Brooklyn via California’s DJ Still Life has been addicted to the sound of a raspy snare and a hi-hat since he first encountered hip-hop and the music that makes up its building blocks. He has a monthly podcast loosely based around dirty beats at Sleeping Giant, and is a contributor to the funk and soul blog Ear Fuzz.
We’ll be giving a workshop on how we use Ableton for production and live performance on July 29th at Dubspot. If you can’t make it in person, it will be streamed live from the Dubspot website. Also, we’ll be performing the next night (Saturday, July 30th) at Knitting Factory in Brooklyn with Teebs at the Alpha Pup party.

We recently remixed one of our favorite artists on the Ghostly International roster, Shigeto. We chose the song Children at Midnight.
For the process we used the Monome and Maschine. Running MLR 4 M4L in Ableton and then Maschine as a plug in within Ableton as well. Sync’d perfect! Rucyl, then laced, looped and sang all the vocals. We also added my nephew, Ajani Blakey on child sounds at the end.
A fun project. Available for Ghostly subscribers, for now.
